The Supreme Purusha : Lord Sri Hari
Lord Sri Hari Narayana is known as the Virat Purusha of the vedas. Here’s what Sri Adi shankracharya said :
Vasudeva (which in short means the all prevading almighty) is the name given only to lord Sri Vishnu as per Epics and vedas, And also confirmed by Adi shankra, and Again quoting the name, Sri Shankra says that he is the only supreme purusha.
The Incarnation of All the four vedas i.e Valmiki Ramayana says :
śārṅgadhanvā hṛṣīkeśaḥ puruṣaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ||
ajitaḥ khaḍgadhṛgviṣṇuḥ kṛṣṇaścaiva mahābalaḥ |
You are the wielder of a bow called Sarnga, the lord of the senses, the supreme soul of the universe, the best of men , the invincible, the wielder of a sword named Nandaka, the all-pervader, the bestower of happiness to the earth and endowed with great might.
ṛtagï satyaṁ paraṁ brahma puruṣaṁ kṛṣṇapiṅgalam, ūrdhvaretaṁ virūpākśaṁ viśvarūpāya vai namo namaḥ.
Prostrations again and again to the Omni-formed Being, the Truth, the Law, the Supreme Absolute, the Purusha of blue-decked yellow hue, the Centralised-force Power, the All-seeing One.
Coming to the katha Upanishad, It says The purusha in his dwarf form is worshipped by all Gods
He leads the prana upwards and casts the apana downwards; the dwarf seated in the middle, all Devas worship. (2.2.3)
The only dwarf described in the vedas is none but VAman avatar of Lord Narayana (vishnu), and Adi shankra himself quoted this verse for Lord Vishnu
. Sri Adi Shankracharya Dedicates the Purusha suktam to Lord Vishnu, here’s one example :
Now we’ll compare The hym with verses from Ramayana.
purusha Suktam, Rig veda 10.90
The Moon was gendered from his mind, and from his eye the Sun had birth; Indra and Agni from his mouth were born, and Vāyu from his breath. Forth from his navel came mid-air the sky was fashioned from his head Earth from his feet, and from his car the regions. Thus they formed the worlds.
All Gods Took birth from purusha, The Three worlds manifested out of him. Now see this :
Valmiki Ranayana 6.117
"In the form of the Vedas, you are the great Bull with hundred heads (rules) and thousand horns (precepts). You are the first creator of all, the three worlds, and the self constituted Lord of all. You are the refuge and the forbear of Siddhas (a class of demi-gods endowed with mystic powers by virtue of their very birth) and Sadhyas (a class of celestial beings.)"
here’s one more, from the same hym
purusha suktam, Rig veda 10.90
A THOUSAND heads hath Puruṣa, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet. On every side pervading earth he fills a space ten fingers wide. This Puruṣa is all that yet hath been and all that is to be; The Lord of Immortality which waxes greater still by food. So mighty is his greatness; yea, greater than this is Puruṣa. All creatures are one-fourth of him, three-fourths eternal life in heaven.
valmiki Ramayana 6.117
- "With thousand feet, with hundred heads and with thousand eyes along with Lakshmi the goddess of wealth, you bear the earth with all its created beings along with its mountains."
- Comment ~> Purusha sukta talks of purusha having thousand eyes, heads, feet. In addition to this, Rig veda has verses for Lord Vishnu, which say He has “faces, mouth and feet” on all sides, i.e Just like Thousand arms, feet and heads, and Calls him producer of HEaven and earth, which is again given in purusha suktam.
- “He who hath eyes on all sides round about him, a mouth on all sides, arms and feet on all sides, He the Sole God, producing earth and heaven, weldeth them, with his arms as wings, together.” ( RV 10.81)
- Father of holy hymns, Soma (Lord Narayana) flows onward the Father of the earth, Father of heaven: Father of Agni, Sūrya's generator, the Father who begat Indra and Viṣṇu (RV 9.96)
- “Night has been recognized as the closing of your eye-lids and the day, as the opening of eye-lids. The correct usages of your words are the Vedas. Bereft of you, this visible universe does not exist."
- Comment ~> purusha suktam says purusha is the only thing that is there and will be, same is said here i.e nothing exists beyond him
- “You are the sacrificial performance. You are the sacred syllable 'Vashat' (on hearing which the Adhvaryu priest casts the oblation to a deity into the sacrificial fire). You are the mystic syllable 'OM'. You are higher than the highest. People neither know your end nor your origin nor who you are in reality."
- Comment ~> purusha suktam talks of how purusha is the highest, same is said here for Lord Rama.
Morever, The word “Puran purushottam” was used for him by Lord Brahma, in the presence of All Gods
amoghāste bhaviṣyanti bhaktimanto narā bhuvi ||
ye tvāṃ devam dhruvaṃ bhaktāḥ purāṇaṃ puruṣottamam| prāpnuvanti sadā kāmāniha loke pātra ca || (6.117)
So basically, the 6.117 sarga of VR is nothing but the purusha suktam only, Just in a different form. This is the reason why Maharishi agastya called Valmiki Ramayana as incarnation of vedas and Maharishi Valmiki called it the essence of all vedic literature.
The Mahabharata, Santo parva says :
tatra yaḥ paramātmā hi sa nityaṃ nirguṇaḥ smaratāṃ | sa hi nārāyaṇo jjeyaḥ sarvātmā puruṣo hi saḥ ||'T
"The truth is that He who is the Supreme Soul is always devoid of Rajas and Tamas. 𝙃𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙉𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙣𝙖. 𝙃𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙖𝙡 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙡, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙝𝙖."
hence, there is no doubt, that Virat purusha/puran purusha/purushottama is None other than God Sri Hari Vishnu🙏
Great. Haribol!
